Welcome note

Welcome to the report of the Design Council / HEFCE fact finding visit to the US. As part of the process to develop and implement recommendations from the 'Cox Review of Creativity in Business' in the UK, a group of academics, officials and policy makers visited universities and design firms in California, Chicago and Boston. We were looking at multidisciplinary centres and courses that combine management, technology and design in order to develop creative and innovative graduates and businesses. Insights and information from the visit will inform proposals that UK universities and regional bodies are developing in response to the Cox review.

Arrival

So - most of us are here, albeit somewhat jetjagged! Interesting journeys from the airport to Palo Alto - already a sense of the concentration of creative and innovative businesses and activities in the Bay area. Alice and I were on a 'door to door' bus with an Apple employee from Dublin - over here for a big event at Apple tomorrow (Tuesday). Apparently we'll all read/hear about it! And Penny travelled in with a Google employee. Huge Oracle buildings spotted and where Hewlett Packard started in a house in a residential street pointed out to us. Glorious late summer sunshine - with the inevitable strip of low cloud hanging over the Golden Gate bridge.
